Today I was watching True Life on MTV. It was True Life: I'm Having an Arranged Marriage. There were three people who described the stages of the arranged marriages they were going through. One man, living here in the states, was engaged to a woman in India, his home country, whom he had only met twice. He was waiting to fly over, marry her, and bring her back here. The next person was a young woman who was engaged to a man she had only met twice. Her family had set them up and he was flying in to make arrangements for their wedding. They were not allowed to touch until their wedding. The third girl was not engaged but was being set up by her family in hopes of finding a fiance. The three people were from families where an arranged marriage is part of their religion and culture.
I just can not imagine having an arranged marriage. I respect other religions and their beliefs, but I think that so many aspects of religion are based on ancient times and are not adjusted to life and society today. How can you spend your life with someone you've only met twice? You barely know anything about them. It's just not practical. You could end up marrying someone you have no chemistry with and then what would you do? You would be stuck with them for life.
On the other hand, maybe they know something we don't because seems like they stay married for life, whereas most Americans are divorced within a few years.

I like the television show True Life. I try to watch it every chance I get. Sometimes it is good on what they are trying to bring out to out attention and other times I do not like what they feature on the show. Good question. I'm not sure how can you marry someone you met twice. Maybe their culture has them (the parents) to pick out who they have to marry and all that good stuff and bad stuff. As the title of the show says, it is their true life.
Having an arranged marriage would be so killer. Why pick a random person to force myself to like when I could let my mom do it for me?
I also couldn't imagine being forced to marry someone. However, I was raised to believe that you should marry who you truly love and nothing else. When I was little my neighbors were from Bangladesh and were in an arranged marriage. They actually were very much in love, and didn’t act like they were married because they had too.
I couldn't stand having an arranged marriage. I think that is ridiculous. I respect their traditions but thier is no way that you can randomly pick someone and know that they are your soulmate. Its hard enough to find someone when you dat and can pick who your dating, even then you might not find the one. Good post emily
so basically true live is one of my favorite tv shows of all times. they do an aweosme job of capturing the feeling behind the people their documetning. but yeah i totaly agree with you about the whole arranged marriage thing i don't know how i would be able to aree with it. althoght i would save a lot of problems with dating lol j/k. but yeah it makes me really happy that i kind of have the right to marry any one i want.
Hey Emily! I think that I watched this episode of True Life also. I'm pretty sure that my mom accidentally attempted to do the same for me! LoL.. "Baby i'm sho you'll like ha" It's kind of a funny story, because we ended up dating for five months. But that was nothing like marraige! There is no way IN HELL I could marry someone that I only saw twice. Sounds like a potential tragedy to me! But can't wait for you and Corbin's wedding! Hahaha!
Yeah I couldn't do an arranged marriage because there are too many factors in a relationship for someone else to pick for me. And for the marriage rate thing yeah we have a lot of divorces but that just shows we know to get out when it's not working instead of someone who is forced to stick with someone who they are not happy with
I don't think it would be right for someone else to pick who I was going to marry. If the person was only picking someone who had money or something then for all i know it could be some old ugly fat guy and can you say eewww gross.
